I remember exactly what I was doing. Caleb was 4 months old. We were living in California at the time so by most standards we should have been still asleep. I had gotten up with him and was in Brian's recliner nursing him. I had dozed off and heard the Today show on TV. I yelled for Brian cuz that meant he was late for work. Yet as I watched I realized Brian wasn't late, the Today show was on early and something unbelievable was happening. Then I watched in horror as the 2nd tower was hit on live TV. Matt Lauer was talking to a caller and the cameras were on the towers. It was so surreal to me. Brian went to work for just a little while but since we lived on a military base we were in basic lock down for days especially the first 2 days. The schools on base were closed, it took an hour or so to get on base that week. It was hard for me not to be glued to the TV, as I am sure it was for so many people. Leo was just over 2, Caleb was 4 months old.
My husband's command did a remembrance service this morning. "we stand in silence and we remember those lost on that dreadful day. My command held a remembrance ceremony this morning. Half staffed the flag, read the timeline, quoted from President Bush's address to the nation and had closing prayer. All while the cars rushed by just outside the fence. Freedom is not free, it has a heavy price. God bless this country and its leaders." quote for his status on facebook.
I am proud to be a military wife and am thankful to those who make the sacrifice every day for our freedom. I am also thankful for the police and firemen and other emergency personnel that risk their lives to save others.
